Armenia: after elections

After ranking second in the presidential elections in Armenia on 18 February, the leader of the Heritage party Raffi Hovannisian started to organize rallies and meetings as a protest to the results of the elections.  Although he was aware that these rallies will not give a result, he still made some unsuccessful efforts to protect his reputation in front of his electorate and to fulfill his already empty position in sociopolitical life. During this period Hovannisian had a meeting with President Serzh Sargsyan after what he expressed that was not satisfied with the results of the meeting. He wanted to be represented in several ministries and committees, but leading Republican Party of Armenia banned this wish by stating its impossibility…

…Taking economic problems into consideration we can conclude that for now Sargsyan is able to manage the state control. Nevertheless, it should be emphasized that in the upcoming 5 years Sargsyan can face internal and external problems in foreign policy. Recently, Russia continued to increase pressure over Armenia for becoming a member of the Custom Union and Eurasian Union. Of course, close cooperation with these Russian leading organizations will cause problems in relations to the European Union…

During Sargsyan’s visit to Russia, on 11 March 2013, deputy Foreign Minister of the United Kingdom, Simon Fraser stated that the membership of Armenia to the Custom Union will be a problem for its free trade zone cooperation with the European Union. Of course, it was not just a coincidence that this statement was declared immediately on the same day when Sargsyan visited Russia…

Even if Armenia wants, they are not capable to escape from Russian impact. The entire control packages of all the strategic industrial enterprises in the country are in the hands of Russia. Armenia completely depends on Russia in the field of energy. Approximately, 2 million Armenians live in Russia. The remittances send by these migrants each year assumed to be more than 1 billion. There are 102 Russian military bases in Armenia…

All these conditions do not predict a better perspective for Sargsyan in next 5 years…
